Parting thoughts on another Blaugust

Another August has come and gone, and I’ve filled a month with posts and didn’t miss a day by my reckoning! So it was a successful Blaugust… in that regard. It was quite the month, and I figured I’d give my thoughts about how things went.
Let’s see if there’s a reason for me to keep posting on the blog!

Some concluding thoughts on RP
Filed under:

Game Development — Psychochild @ 11:49 PM
I’ve spent the month talking about RP in MMOs in various forms. It’s something I’ve grown more interested in over time, reaching a peak because of my involvement in FFXIV RP. Although it’s really a niche interest, I find it interesting as a player but also as a developer.
Let me share a few closing thoughts for the month.

Leadership in RP

Leadership — Psychochild @ 11:24 PM
I’ve talked about Leadership before, mostly in the context of how to run a studio or develop a game. But RP can help in MMOs as well, especially when running a community. Let’s take a look at some of the ways that leaders can lead in RP.

RP special snowflakes
Filed under:
Game Design
Game Development — Psychochild @ 11:55 PM
Another thing I’ve run into in my more intensive introduction to RP in FFXIV is a lot more “special snowflakes”. People who want to stand out from the crowd so badly that they stick out more like a store thumb than a well-written character. I thought this was interesting enough to look at a little more in depth.

RP mistake: apologizing for your character
Filed under:
Game Design
Game Development — Psychochild @ 11:48 PM
One thing I’ve run into a surprising number of times while I’ve been RPing in FFXIV is people apologizing OOCly for their character. I’m RPing a scene with a less-than-friendly character and via some OOC channel I get a quick, “I’m sorry my character is like that.”
This confuses me a bit, so I gave some time to thinking about it.

It’s complicated… the history of tabletop RPGs
Filed under:
Game Design
Game Development — Psychochild @ 11:48 PM
Kotaku published a pretty good article about the early days of tabletop RPGs, looking at exactly who did what to influence the hobby today. Since I’ve been talking about RP, I thought this would be interesting to touch upon.
Let’s travel back in time and see how messy things got!

The last week: Miscellaneous topics
Filed under:
Game Design
Game Development — Psychochild @ 11:48 PM
This week is the last week of Blaugust 2019. I figured I’d post a few miscellaneous topics his week. Stuff that mostly deals with RP, but that also may not have fit neatly into other weeks. I’ll probably do a wrap-up post on Saturday as well, thinking about this Blaugust.
So, let me do a bit of brainstorming after the break and see if anyone has anything to contribute!

Are there reasons not to have RP in MMOs?
Filed under:
Game Design
Game Development — Psychochild @ 11:47 PM
To end the week, I wanted to think a bit about a contrary opinion. I’ve spent all week talking about RP from a development point of view and how to facilitate and support it in the game, particularly in ways that don’t disturb other parts of the game. But are there reasons not to have RP in the game?
I’m not sure where this post will go, but let’s consider this a bit as I write.

Writing better lore for RP.
Filed under:
Game Design
Game Development — Psychochild @ 11:51 PM
Yesterday I looked at how to design for RP, how a few changes might bring about better RP in a game while not affecting the rest of the server much. Today, I want to look more at lore, and how you can write that to facilitate RP in the game.
Again, I’ll look at FFXIV as an example to draw from.

Designing for better RP
Filed under:
Game Design
Game Development — Psychochild @ 11:55 PM
In addition to better tools, there are some design considerations in an MMO that can be made to help facilitate RP. These design decisions can seem pretty small, but they can have a pretty big impact on how people interact with the game. With these considerations, RP could be enhanced in a game, even if RP isn’t the focus of the game.
Let’s take a look at a few ideas to improve RP, shall we?
